Tucson police officers shot and wounded a man Tuesday morning during a confrontation in a midtown neighborhood.

The incident started about 9:30 a.m. when police were called to the 5600 block of East Pima Street, near North Craycroft Road, by neighbors who said a man carrying a knife was being โ€œaggressiveโ€ with passersby, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a department spokesman.

Officers found the knife-carrying man walking in the area.

While talking to him, police said the man pulled out a gun.

At least two officers fired at the man, Dugan said. It was not known if the man fired at officers.

Debbie Mounce, manager of Harlow Gardens, a nursery located down the street from where the shooting occurred, reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Another neighbor said that shortly after, officers were seen standing near a man who was slumped over on the ground.

The officers were not injured.

The man was in stable condition at a hospital, police said shortly before noon on Tuesday. His name was not immediately released.

More than 20 officers and detectives were on scene Tuesday morning to assist in the investigation.

Traffic in the area was restricted for several hours, while police investigated.
