State forestry officials are planning to conduct a prescribed burn on private land Monday in Altar Valley, southwest of Tucson.
The Pig Mountain burn will take place on the Elk Horn Ranch about 50 miles southwest of Tucson.
The 617-acre burn is slated to begin at 8 a.m. if conditions are right, including the weather, according to a news release from the Department of Forestry and Fire Management.
The purpose is to reduce dry, overgrown grasses and brush while eliminating hazardous fuels in the area.
Ignitions will begin in the morning and are expected to concluded by early afternoon. Crews will then monitor the burned area through the rest of the day.
Smoke will be visible throughout the Altar Valley, Avra Valley areas and across much of the region. There will be no other impacts to nearby residents, the department said.
The prescribed burn is part of an effort between state forestry and the Altar Valley Conservation Alliance.
