The basketball court at Marana High School was taken over by the schoolβs staff members and officers of the Marana Police Department on Wednesday night.
This is the second year school staffers and police officers battled with each other to raise money for the schoolβs basketball teams as part of a fundraiser hosted by the girls varsity basketball team. The prize for the winning team? Bragging rights.
βI thought the MPD would win but glad that the teachers kept their streak,β Kyndra Schrader, a Marana High freshman. The school staff, led by student coaches, won for a second straight year 55-46.
The police officers werenβt sore losers, though one officer jokingly arrested a teacher during the game because the teacher was scoring too many points.
βLast year we lost by one point so we are looking forward to getting any advice from the student coaches,β Marana Police Chief Terry Rozema said.
Cheyenne Clevish, a senior on the girls varsity team who coached the police team, said she was hoping for a good crowd. And it was: The event raised more than $800.
Global Construction sponsored the game, and donations came from the snack bar, admission and $10 T-shirts. All proceeds went to funding the girls and boys basketball teamsβ summer camp, travel expenses, banquets, awards and any new gear, according to Camron Dozier, coach of the girls varsity basketball team.
The event came about after Dozier and his police officer friend were throwing around ideas about how to raise money for his studentsβ summer camp. βI didnβt want students to have to pay for their summer camp,β he said.
Thirteen Marana High staff members and 11 police officers participated this year. Dozier said he hopes to include more interactive ideas for next yearβs game such as a 3-point contest.
