Authorities have released new details in the fatal shooting of a Tucson man by police during a standoff earlier this month.

Jacob Dyer, 27, was shot and killed the night of April 3 during a domestic violence incident at a home in the 7300 block of East Calle Merida, the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team said in a news release.

Two people were outside the house when police arrived. Officers were told Dyer had access to weapons and had a history of mental health issues. Dyer remained in the house where he was getting more agitated and ignored efforts by police to talk to him, the release said.

Leading up to the standoff, police were told Dyer had been exhibiting unusual and violent behavior. That included threatening the two people in the house with a knife, choking one of them and β€œracking” a shotgun in their presence, the release said.

At one point, Dyer exited the residence and tried to enter a vehicle parked near an exterior door. A K-9 was deployed, which caused Dyer to flee back into the residence, police said.

Inside the home, as negotiations continued, officers heard Dyer acting erratically, turning the lights on and off, the sounds of a racking shotgun, and glass breaking, the PCRIT noted in the release.

The police SWAT unit arrived and later Dyer exited the home holding a firearm, police said. Dyer was shot by Officer Kyle Frank, a 16-year TPD veteran, when he came outside and pointed a gun toward the officers, the release said.

Dyer was taken to the hospital, where he died.

A shotgun and a rifle were found near where Dyer was shot. Several types of ammunition, including shotgun shells, were also found in the house, the release said.

Law enforcement agencies across the region make the PRCIT, which handles officer-involved shootings here. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and Marana Police Department have been assigned primary responsibility for the criminal investigation of the shooting.
