The boyfriend of the mother of a 17-month-old girl was arrested on suspicion of abuse in the child's death, authorities said.
Julian Moore, 27, is facing child abuse charges and was booked into the Pima County jail in Ajo, said Deputy Ryan Inglett, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman, on Friday.
The child has been identified as Victorialynn Hererdia-Manuel of Ajo, said Inglett.
The child was pronounced dead June 10 in the 400 block of West Arroyo Avenue in the town of about 4,000 west of Tucson. It is about 45 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, and once was a mining community that now is a retirement and artist town.
On June 10 shortly after midnight, deputies responded to the home for a report of a child who was not breathing. When deputies arrived, they did CPR until paramedics arrived and continued emergency care, but the child was pronounced dead on scene, Inglett said.
Homicide detectives are continuing the investigation, said Inglett.
