A 27-year-old man is facing first-degree murder in a shooting that killed one man and left another wounded on Tucson's west side two weeks ago.
Steve Anaya, who was taken into custody on unrelated charges after a traffic stop Thursday, now faces murder and one count each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman, on Friday.
The dead man was identified as Uriel Galvez-Galvez, 30.
Dugan said that Anaya became a person of interest in the Aug. 18 double-shooting in the area of West 36th Street and South Mission Road.
The driver of a Dodge Ram truck told police that he and his friend were shot by an acquaintance who he picked up and gave a ride. Anaya shot the men after he demanded the keys to the truck.
The truck's driver told police that he ran from the truck and hid until the vehicle left and he then sought help at a nearby apartment complex. Officers gave medical aid to the man before paramedics took him to a hospital.
Several hours later, officers found the truck in the desert north of 36th Street and South Greasewood Road with Galvez-Galvez dead in the truck.Β
On Sept. 1, officers did a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 2000 block of West Missouri Street, north of West Irvington Road. The vehicle had three occupants and one ran when the vehicle stopped. Officers caught the man who was identified as Anaya. A search warrant for the vehicle was obtained and a handgun was found, said Dugan.
Preliminary ballistic testing shows that the handgun was used in the homicide, Dugan said. Β Β
