A pedestrian struck by a vehicle last month in Tucson's midtown died Oct. 1, police said Monday.

Donald Rieffel, 72, died at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson from injuries suffered in the Sept. 21 crash, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

Rieffel was struck by a 2009 Mercedes shortly before 8 p.m. on North Alvernon Way and East Bellevue Street.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

Traffic detectives learned that the vehicle was traveling south on Alvernon when it struck Rieffel who was running west from Bellevue across Alvernon in an unmarked crosswalk, Bay said.

Speed and impairment were not factors in the crash, said Bay. No citations had been issued.

Since January, there have been 41 fatalities in the city, compared to 43 as of this date last year, according to police records.
