Pima County Sheriff's Sgt. Mark Bustamante lost an eye after an altercation with Yesennia Gonzalez during her arrest this weekend on suspicion of DUI.

A Pima County Sheriff's sergeant lost his left eye after a handcuffed woman kicked him in the face with her boot during a DUI arrest this weekend, officials say.

Deputies arrested Yesennia Gonzalez, 28, on suspicion of DUI about midnight Saturday in the area of East Drexel Road and South Alvernon Way, the department said in a news release.

Deputies placed Gonzalez in handcuffs and were trying to put her in a patrol car when she began kicking at them.

During the struggle, Gonzalez kicked Sgt. Mark Bustamante in the left eye with the heel of her boot, the release said.

Bustamante was taken to a hospital and doctors operated on his eye, but couldn't save it.

Gonzalez was booked into the Pima County jail on two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, one count of resisting arrest, and one count of DUI.
