A Sierra Vista police officer and a shoplifting suspect were struck by a car after a foot chase and struggle on a main roadway Friday night, authorities said.
The officer was taken to a Sierra Vista hospital and the woman was flown by helicopter to a hospital for treatment, said Cpl. Tim Wachtel, a Sierra Vista Police Department spokesman.
City spokesman Adam Curtis said the officer was released from a hospital after treatment of unspecified injuries, and Wachtel said the woman is hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident occurred at 6:46 p.m. when the officer was investigating a shoplifting incident, Wachtel said. He said the officer contacted the woman in the 3000 block of Fry Boulevard, and the woman ran.
The officer chased the woman onto Fry Boulevard. Officials said there was a brief struggle before the officer and suspect were struck by an eastbound vehicle. The driver remained at the scene.
The Sierra Vista Police Department and the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.
