A family fun day called "Kids in the Canyon" kicks off at Madera Canyon at 9 a.m. today, with day-use fees waived in honor of the event.

The event, hosted by the Friends of Madera Canyon in cooperation with the Nogales Ranger District, Children’s Forest Program, features picnics and recreation activities in the canyon to help engage youth in the outdoors, according to a news release.

Smokey the Bear will greet participants and activities will occur at the Proctor Picnic Area near the canyon's entrance until noon.

Attendees can take guided nature walks along the Bud Gode Interpretive Nature Trail and children's art activities and nature displays will be set up in the Proctor Ramada.
