A man driving a stolen car was killed in an early morning crash Tuesday on the north side, Tucson police said.
Tucson police said officers were called to the 1000 block of East River Road at about 3 a.m. for a rollover crash. When officers arrived passersby had removed an unresponsive man from a vehicle that had flipped over. CPR was administered to the man until fire personnel arrived.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver was identified as Michael Herrera, 26.
Sgt. Pete Dugan, a department spokesman, said detectives learned the vehicle was eastbound at a high rate of speed on River, between North First Avenue and North Via Entrada, when the driver lost control going around a bend and the vehicle went into the opposing lanes where it struck a curb and decorative wall and flipped over.
No one else was in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Police determined the car, a black Chevrolet Impala, had been stolen from a used car dealership prior to the crash.
Since January, there have been 37 traffic fatalities in the city, the same number on this date last year, according to police data.
