The driver killed in a single-vehicle wreck early Monday in the Foothills has been identified as Nandial Patel, 78.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department responded to the crash, which knocked out the traffic signals near North Sabino Canyon Road and East Shoreline Drive, shortly before 5 a.m. Monday.

Deputy Ryan Inglett, a department spokesman, said Patel was driving northbound on Sabino Canyon Road when his vehicle went off the roadway and hit an electrical box. Deputies arrived and began performing CPR on Patel until medical personnel arrived.

Patel was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The traffic signals were functioning again as of 9 a.m., said Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman Deputy Ryan Inglett. No more information was immediately available on the wreck.
