Seventy Coronado K-8 students received an out-of-this world gift Friday from the Sun City Oro Valley Astronomy Club.
The organization donated 70 telescopes โ one for each fifth-grader at the Amphitheater school.
The club members showed the students how to use the equipment on Friday and will return to the school throughout the year for instruction and nighttime viewing.
Over the last seven years, the group has donated 600 new telescopes to Coronado students.
Bioscience, medicine internships available
Arizona students with an interest in bioscience and medicine are encouraged to apply for the Helios Scholars at TGen summer internship program.
Students selected will have the opportunity to be mentored by Translational Genomics Research Institute scientists on projects that aim for new discoveries about illnesses such as neurological disorders, infectious diseases and many types of cancer.
Applications for the eight-week, paid internships are due Feb. 12. It is open to Arizona high school students as well as undergraduate and graduate students.
Forty-five students will be selected.

hosting open house
St. Michaelโs School, a private school on Tucsonโs east side, is hosting an open house Wednesday.
Parents can visit the campus at 602 N. Wilmot Road from 9 to 11 a.m. to learn about the schoolโs program and meet the staff.

3 UA library students awarded scholarships
Three University of Arizona students have been awarded scholarships by the Friends of the Green Valley Library.
Jusdina Nolin-Brown, Hanni Nabahe and Joseph Garcia are all employees of the Pima County Library System and are enrolled at the School of Information Resources and Library Science at the UA.
The scholarships are made possible by sales from two Green Valley bookstores and online, plus dues and donations from the 900-plus members of the Friends of the Green Valley Library.
Outlet mall operator offers scholarships
Tucson-area high school seniors are encouraged to apply for college scholarships being awarded by the Simon Youth Foundation.
To be eligible to apply, soon-to-be high school graduates must live within 50 miles of the new Tucson Premium Outlets, 6401 Marana Center Blvd.
A group of employees at the Simon Property Group, which operates the Tucson Premium Outlets, founded the Simon Youth Foundation.
With the opening of Tucson Premium Outlets in October, this is the first year Tucson-area students qualify for the scholarships, which are awarded in communities that are home to Simon, Mills or Premium Outlet malls.
Twenty-five scholarships worth up to $1,500 will be awarded across the country to be used to enroll in an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school.
Winners will be selected based on financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities. Students who are the first in their family to pursue a post-secondary education will also be given close consideration.
An Award of Excellence will be given to the top candidate from among the applicants that represent the nationwide Premium Outlets locations. That student will receive a $10,000 award.
