Sunnyside Unified School District is partnering with local companies to provide a computer science program for its high school students.

The program will use curricula from University of California-Berkeley and the University of Washington to help students test for nationally-recognized industry certification and get advanced placement computer science credits.

Partners include Raytheon, IBM and Tucson Medical Center.

Asst. principal in Vail district receives honor

A Vail School District assistant principal was nationally recognized.

Jason Campos, who serves as assistant principal at Mesquite and Senita Valley elementary schools, was selected as Arizona’s national outstanding assistant principal of the year from the National Association of Elementary School Principals

Amphi district to host back-to-school fair

The Amphitheater School District’s foundation is hosting a back-to-school resource fair on Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Any student attending an Amphitheater school can come to the fair, which will be at the Amphitheater Clothing Bank, 3335 N. Stone Ave., to receive new socks, underwear, jeans, t-shirts, backpack and other supplies.

The students can also receive hygiene supplies and free haircuts. The foundation also plans to include a mobile immunization clinic and coupons for physical exams from Southern Arizona Urgent Care.

The foundation invited the public to donate new or gently used clothing items. There is an especially high need for boys’ pants. Donations can be made at any Amphitheater school or arranged for pickup by calling 520-696-5147.

Grand opening set for

Marana elementary

Marana Unified School District is inviting the public to the grand opening of the expanded Picture Rocks Elementary School on Aug. 4.

The event is at the school’s campus, 5875 N. Sanders Road at 5 p.m. School tour and refreshment will be provided.

Picture Rocks Elementary is a result of the unification between Desert Winds Elementary, which served kindergarteners through third graders, and Picture Rocks Intermediate School, which served fourth through sixth graders.

Education foundation seeks donations

The Education Enrichment Foundation is seeking the public’s help in gathering new clothes, shoes, school supplies and hygiene products to donate to Tucson Unified School District students.

Donations can be made at the following locations until Aug. 3:

  • Factory 2 U, 1227 W. St. Mary’s Road
  • Fallas, 4152 E. 22nd St.

OV group offers teachers $50 vouchers

The Friends of the Oro Valley Library is working with 32 schools in the Tucson area to provide vouchers to teachers to buy books.

Teachers at the following schools can apply to receive $50 vouchers for Scholastic Publishing:

  • Amphitheater: Copper Creek, Donaldson Elementary, Holaway, Keeling, Nash, Painted Sky, Rio Vista and Walker Elementary schools, and Coronado and Wilson K-8 schools.
  • Marana: Picture Rocks, Roadrunner and Thornydale elementary schools
  • Flowing Wells: Centennial, Douglas, Hendricks, Homer Davis, Laguna and Richardson elementary schools
  • Tucson Unified: Banks, Ford, Hudlow, Steele, Tolson and Wright elementary schools, and Morgan Maxwell, Hollander and Robins K-8 schools
  • Charters: Basis Oro Valley primary and Imago Dei middle schools

Last year, the Oro Valley group worked with 23 schools and helped 213 teachers. The project is made possible through used book sales and donations from the community and the Hughes Federal Credit Union.
