A Tucson student won second place in an academic competition for blind students.

Joey Parra, 12, of the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind’s Tucson campus was among 1,100 blind or visually impaired students who competed in the 2016 Braille Challenge, which took place in June in Los Angeles.

The competition tested students in various literacy categories, including reading comprehension, spelling and graph literacy.

Parra took second place in the sophomore division, which is for students in grades five and six. This is not his first victory at the challenge. In 2014, he placed second in the freshman division.

He has also been a regular at the podium at state competitions. Parra has won first or second place in the state’s Braille challenges for the past three years.
