The Tucson Unified School District has a new assistant superintendent in charge of curriculum and instruction.
Gabriel Trujillo was appointed by the TUSD Governing Board Tuesday.
He comes to Tucson from the Phoenix Union High School District where he served as principal of Trevor Browne High.
Trujillo is replacing Steve Holmes who left TUSD in 2015 after he was named superintendent of Sunnyside School District.
Two student delegates from Arizona wanted
Applications are now being accepted for the United States Senate Youth Program.
Two Arizona high school students will be selected to join 102 other delegates in March for the program’s 55th annual Washington Week.
The leadership program is a week-long experience that highlights the workings of the U.S. Senate and the federal government as a whole.
Each student will receive a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship in addition to the all-expenses-paid trip to the nation’s capital.
Potential delegates must be juniors or seniors and elected student officers for the current school year.

Deputies to focus on school-zone violations
Amphitheater School District is partnering with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to raise awareness of traffic laws near school zones and school buses.
Starting Monday, deputies will be riding on or traveling near school buses and posted at various schools to watch for violations.
The effort, dubbed Operation School Bus, will be conducted all week.
11 educators will get science, math push
Eleven Southern Arizona teachers have been selected to take part in a program designed to strengthen STEM education in Pima County.
As part of the STEMAZing Teacher Leader program, the educators will receive professional coaching on how to effectively implement STEM lessons using affordable materials with the hope that they will share what they best practices learned with their colleagues.
The teachers are:

The program is operated by the Pima County School Superintendent’s Office and funded by the Thomas R. Brown Family Foundation.
Elks donation to help students learn to sew
A $1,000 donation from the Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge No. 2815 will help Southern Arizona teens learn to sew.
The donation to Teens Sew Cool is funded by a grant from the Arizona Elks Major Projects.
The organization teaches sewing to teens and preteens from underprivileged families to promote self esteem and life skills.
Classes are held at Coronado School in Catalina, Mountain Vista School in Oracle, and San Manuel High School.
The donation will be used to purchase sewing machines for advanced students who have been in the program for two years.
