Willcox teen to work

on cancer research

A Southern Arizona student has been named a winner of the Emperor Science Award.

Jane Jansen of Willcox High School was selected based on her awareness of emerging developments in cancer treatment, including precision medicine, immunotherapy and epigenetics.

The Emperor Science Award program is designed to encourage high school students to explore careers in science, specifically cancer research and care.

Jansen will now have the opportunity to work alongside a scientist on a multiweek cancer research project. She will also receive a Google Chrome Notebook, a $1,500 stipend and the opportunity to continue a relationship with a mentor.

The award was presented by PBS LearningMedia and Stand Up To Cancer.

Basis 8th-grader gets 2nd in archery contest

A Basis Oro Valley eighth-grader took second place in the 2016 Vegas Shoot World Archery Festival.

Andrew Park has been practicing archery for two years, and also won first place at the Arizona State Indoor Championship and Arizona State Indoor Junior Olympic Archery Development.

Sabino welcomes open enrollment students

Sabino High is hosting registration events for open enrollment students.

The Gregory School, an independent college preparatory school at 3231 N. Craycroft Road, has two upcoming events.

Spotlight on Science Night

When: Wednesday from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

What: Breakout sessions with scientists, keynote speech by Dr. Jonathan Overpeck, Nobel Prize-winning climatologist, more than 100 science exhibits

Where: Gregory School campus

The event is free and open to the public.

The Sip wine and food tasting with area chefs, silent auction

When: March 2 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Where: Gregory School gymnasium

Tickets: $40, which includes eight wines and food samples

St. Michael’s to host open house

St. Michael’s School, an east-side private school, is hosting an open house Tuesday.

Parents and prospective students can visit the campus, 602 N. Wilmot Road, from 9 to 11 a.m. and meet with the staff.

Vail Youth Symphony at Vail Pride Day

The Vail Youth Symphony will perform at the upcoming Vail Pride Day.

The group will perform on the outside stage at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 20.

The youth symphony, which has 52 students in the symphony orchestra and 35 in the strings orchestra, is in its second season. Its number of sponsors has been growing, the symphony said in a news release.

Funds for children of Dept. of Navy corpsmen

Scholarships are available to local children of Marines and Navy corpsmen to attend college and career and technical education programs. The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation will accept applications through March 1. For more information on eligibility, requirements or to apply, go to www.mcsf.org.

Vantage West to award $10K in scholarships

A Southern Arizona credit union is awarding $1,000 scholarships to 10 college-bound students.

Vantage West Credit Union is accepting applications for the scholarships through April 9. Recipients will be selected based on academic merit, a written essay and character as demonstrated by activities and volunteerism.

To be eligible, applicants must be Vantage West Credit Union members in good standing or have a parent or legal guardian in good standing. Students must also plan to attend school in-state next year.
