Five students from the Tucson area were named National Merit Scholarship winners.

This round of awards, financed by colleges and universities, were announced last week.

The local winners are Saโ€™id W. Badareen (University High School), Skylar N. Dehnert (The Gregory School), Emil A. Jiralerspong (The Gregory School), Umar H. Mohd Rizal (Flowing Wells High School) and Rohan A. Rajagopal (University High School).

The college-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

These Merit Scholars join more than 2,900 other college-sponsored award recipients who were announced in June. Sponsor colleges selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the National Merit Scholarship program.
