The Tucson Unified School District is making progress in its search for an internal auditor after enlisting a search firm.

The recruiting firm of McPherson & Jacobson LLC is being paid nearly $13,000 for its services. It has yielded five applicants, two of whom are being seriously considered by TUSD.

The district has been searching for an internal auditor since April, failing until recently to attract qualified applicants. The post is one that has been recommended to be put in place over the years in external audits and by the Governing Board’s audit committee as a way to beef up internal checks and balances. McPherson & Jacobson, which has previously provided recruitment services for TUSD, has been working since December on developing a candidate profile, advertising the position nationally, interviewing applicants and checking references.

Of the five applicants, one withdrew, saying the salary was not enough to relocate. Initially, TUSD said the position would pay as much as $75,000, but materials provided by McPherson & Jacobson listed a salary range between $75,000 and $85,000.

The internal auditor will be responsible for examining and evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of the management control systems practiced by the district to ensure compliance with local, state and federal rules for financial reporting.

Governing Board approval was not required to hire McPherson & Jacobson because the firm has previously been used by TUSD. That let TUSD add to the firm’s existing scope of work and nailed down the cost.
