A girl who crossed a road with running water from a wash was knocked down and swept about 20 yards Wednesday. She was unconscious when passersby pulled her out and called 911.

The girl, who struck her head when the 2-foot-deep water knocked her over on the road, was in stable condition and taken to Banner-University Medical Center by Drexel Heights Fire District paramedics, said Tracy Koslowski, a district spokeswoman.

The area was at South San Joaquin Road at West Sunset View, north of West Ajo Way. Thunderstorms with heavy rains hit the area Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service says.

Koslowski said the girl, whose age wasn't available, had just been dropped off at a school bus stop when the accident occurred.

When paramedics arrived shortly before 5 p.m., she was still unconscious.

No further information was immediately available.
