Fans of the Rose Canyon Lake area in the Catalina Mountains will get to enjoy the scenic spot a bit longer than usual this year.

The area — popular with anglers, campers and hikers — usually is closed for the season at the end of October but will remain open until the end of November, said Heidi Schewel, spokeswoman for the Coronado National Forest.

“Last year, several visitors inquired about keeping Rose Canyon Lake and Campground open beyond the scheduled closing date at the end of October,” Schewel said. “So this year access to the lake and parts of the campground will be open until November 30 or until the first snowfall, whichever occurs first.

“This year it will be on a trial basis,” she said.

A turnoff for a road to the lake is at mile marker 17 on the Catalina Highway northeast of Tucson. Day use admission is $10 per vehicle.
