Traffic snakes through a curve near Old Ajo Way and Arizona 86, the Ajo Highway, between Kinney and Valencia roads west of Tucson. The Arizona Department of Transportation is widening this segment of the Ajo Highway to two lanes in each direction. The project includes work on guardrails, bridge railings, signs and striping.

An 11-mile stretch of the Ajo Highway between Valencia and Fuller roads will be repaved and repaired over the next four months.

Granite Construction, which won the $4.3 million contract in December, started the repaving project Tuesday. Its crews will also seal chips and cracks, and work on guardrails, signage and striping.

The work is expected to be completed by mid-June, in time for Tucsonans to drive the highway on summer trips to the beach in Rocky Point, Sonora.

Weekday lane closures will be in effect between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. through the end of next week. Pilot cars will be on site to handle traffic, and 15-minute delays are expected, the Arizona Department of Transportation says.
