The Arizona Department of Transportation wants your opinion about the proposed Interstate 11.
The Pima Association of Governments Regional Council, a board made up of the mayors of each local jurisdiction, recently got an update on the project, and ADOT officials are making the rounds to cities and towns along the future highway.
Government and business leaders see the highway infrastructure as a support system for increased economic development, manufacturing and shipping. A two-year feasibility study ended in 2014.
Next, a three-year environmental study is needed to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act. The process includes gathering public opinion about site options and environmental impacts related to the 280-mile stretch of road from the U.S.-Mexico border through Tucson to Wickenburg, which is about 55 miles northwest of Phoenix.
Some sections could be suggested as individual projects. Once funding is identified, additional environmental analysis would be needed before the road could be built.
The report will also include a no-build option.
The deadline for public comment is July 8 for this portion of the environmental study.
