After four decades as part of the downtown landscape, the now-vacant La Placita complex is scheduled to be torn down building by building this week.
HSL Properties, which owns the brightly colored property, told neighbors in a recent letter that it would start taking down most of the buildings.
βPlease remember that we will not be demolishing the Samaniego House, the Stables or the Flin building. We are undertaking safety measures to ensure these buildings remain potentially eligible for the National Historic Register,β HSL Constructions Services told neighbors in a recent letter.
The letter went on to say that efforts are being taken to ensure that the National Register listing of the Tucson Convention Center landscape is not compromised.
Portions of the iconic La Placita development began to come down late last week as crews tore down sections of the buildings to allow access for Tucson Electric Power Co. to remove a transformer.
The developer has submitted plans to build market-rate apartments and ground-floor retail businesses, including a restaurant and a coffee shop.
