Tucson motorists can expect “a year of many changes” as a 4-mile stretch of the city’s interstate will be getting a $171 million makeover, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

ADOT says the project will widen the roughly 4-mile segment of I-10 between Ina and Ruthrauff roads from three lanes to four. The project is expected to be finished by late this year, 2024, the department said Thursday in a news release.

Early this year, crews will place “121 girders for nine new bridges” and concrete paving for the rebuilt section of the freeway.

ADOT plans to leave open three lanes of traffic through the work zone during daytime hours, as well as access to businesses.

“By late 2024, ADOT will shift traffic onto a reconstructed highway featuring four lanes of traffic in each direction,” the release said. And by that time, the Orange Grove Road interchange is expected to reopen with a “wider entrance and exit ramps,” the department said.

ADOT expects the project to continue into 2025 when a reconstructed Sunset Road interchange is set to open.

“The interchange will feature a connection eastward to River Road thanks to a new bridge, funded by Pima County, that will carry traffic over the Union Pacific railroad tracks and the Rillito River,” ADOT said.

Beyond Tucson, ADOT plans to repair the US 191 bridge over I-10, about nine miles west of Willcox, which will include replacing the “girders and deck” that were severely damaged by a crash in 2023. That construction begins this year and will “extend through the summer.” For project updates, visit azdot.gov/US191BridgeRepair.

ADOT is looking to construct a “dual roundabout” in Florence this upcoming year, as well, at State Routes 387 and 79B. At State Route 79 and Florence Heights Drive, ADOT plans to construct a single-lane roundabout. Both projects are scheduled to be completed in the summer. ADOT also has several pavement improvement projects planned in the coming year, including along 10 miles of I-10 near Casa Grande and 20 miles of SR 90 in and near Sierra Vista. For more information, visit azdot.gov/projects.
