A Pima County jury convicted a man of two counts of second-degree murder, in connection with a 2016 DUI crash that killed an elderly couple.
Alexander Bondy was also convicted of endangerment, criminal damage and DUI earlier this week, according to a news release from the Pima County Attorney's Office.
At about 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 11, 2016, Bondy was driving down Golf Links Road, traveling above 90 miles per hour, when he lost control of the car, crossing northbound lanes of traffic, striking the median and going airborne into southbound lanes of traffic, the release said.
Joel W. Cohen, 76, and Mary Jane Cohen, 77, were struck head-on, and because Bondy's car was mid-air at the time, the top of their car was sheared off, killing the couple in a gruesome fashion, the release said.
Witnesses said Bondy was confused, lethargic, had mood swings and was slurring his words. Bondy told police that he was out for a drive to clear his head and had been tired and depressed due to a recent break-up, according to the release.
Bondy admitted to taking some of his father's prescription migraine medication and a blood draw revealed that he had the drugs in his system at the time of the crash, the post said.
Bondy said that the crash was caused by a malfunction to his car's power steering, but a mechanic examined his car and found no issues that would explain what happened, according to the post.
Bondy is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 14.
