Not only did Rep. Martha McSally get a head-start on fundraising in Congressional District 2 race for 2018, she has already amassed a huge war chest.

The Republican incumbent announced that she raised over $1 million in the second quarter of 2017 and had just under a $ 1 million cash on hand, with no outstanding debt.

The only Democratic opponent to announce similar figures was her rival in 2016, emergency room physician Matt Heinz.

Heinz's campaign announced that he had raised over $200,000 between June 13 and June 30.

The only other Democrat to release details about their fundraising totals was retired assistant secretary of Army, Mary Matiella.

On Facebook, Matiella said in the first twelve days of her campaign her team had raised over $30,000.

The statements made by the various campaigns were made ahead of the Federal Election Commission deadline to file their second quarter returns - which is Saturday night - and therefore could not be independently verified.

Democratic candidates in CD2 - including Bruce Wheeler, Billy Kovacs and Jeff Latas - have not disclosed their fundraising.

Former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick is still in an exploratory stage in CD2 and would only be required to disclose fundraising if it exceeded a set amount.

In other campaign finance news, Senate Jeff Flake is expected to report over $1.5 million raised for his re-election during the second quarter.
