New photos show male jaguar sticks around the Santa Ritas

A new batch of photos of an endangered male jaguar walking through the Santa Rita Mountains was released this week by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Some facts about the photos:

• The photos, seven of which were posted on Facebook, were taken as recently as April 10, in both early morning and evening hours. All were taken in March and April.

• The photos demonstrate that this jaguar has generally stuck around the Santa Ritas southeast of Tucson since fall 2012, when a photographer snapped a picture of its tail.

• The photos were taken as part of a three-year, $750,000 project run by the University of Arizona and financed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

• Two of these photos — which were shot about two hours apart at separate sites — show that the jaguar moved about 2.2 miles in rough terrain in early morning hours.
