lights and sirens

Two people, believed to be men, were swept away by floodwater in Nogales between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, officials say.

Nogales police were able to spot one body flowing northbound from Mexico into Arizona in the Nogales Wash on Tuesday afternoon. Police were unable to retrieve the body and contacted the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office for assistance, Sheriff Tony Estrada said.

According to Estrada, officials last saw the body near Rio Rico before losing sight of it.Β

The sheriff's office searched for the body until it was too dark to continue. Estrada said since the incident is a recovery, not a rescue, officials are waiting for the water to recede before continuing the search.

It's been raining consistently in the area, Estrada said Wednesday afternoon.

On Wednesday morning, a separate body was reported to authorities, Estrada said.Β

Estrada said the body was found just north of the border.

No further information has been released.
