Roll a science fair, a childrenβs museum, an open house, a TED Talk and an episode of Shark Tank into one and youβd have the STEM Innovation Challenge Showcase.
Itβs 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on next Saturday, Oct. 15, at Pima Community Collegeβs West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Road.
The idea is to show Tucson what the local science, technology, engineering and math scene looks like, said event planner Michael Peel.
The mega event, sponsored by Pima Community College and 20 partners, promises something for everyone. Hereβs whatβs in it for you.
If youβre looking for something to do with the kids:
- Try mini-science experiments and hands-on activities with the S.Y.STEM Coalition and PC For Kids, 1-3 p.m.
- Get 15-20 minutes of brain games with author and inventor Enrique Feldman at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., or 2:45 p.m.
If youβre looking for a college major or a new career:
- Connect with Pima programs and local employers at career expo booths in the gym from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
- Hear speakers from local high-tech employers AGM Container Controls and World View starting at 3 p.m.
If you want to get inspired by science
- Go to Mars in your imagination with a 3 p.m. keynote presentation from Nagin Cox, a mission lead on NASAβs Curiosity rover project.
- Watch teams of Pima students pitch their business ideas in a Shark Tank-style show with prize money on the line, starting at 4 p.m. The groups have been working since June as part of the Innovation Challenge.
If you want Tucson to go further in tech:
- Join a half-hour micro-workshop at 1:30 p.m. or 2 p.m. to explore big questions like βWhat do the STEM jobs of the future look like in Tucson today?β or βHow can Tucson reduce carbon emissions?β and learn a few steps you can take.
- Listen to a panel discussion highlighting the accomplishments of local women in technology at 1:30 p.m.
