In an effort to help people properly dispose of unused or expired medications, the Pima County Sheriff's Department is hosting a dispose-a-med event this Saturday.Β 

Officials say proper disposal of medications is crucial. They say that oftentimes, those who abuse prescription drugs get them by raiding the medicine cabinets of friends and family.Β 

"Storing unused or outdated prescriptions creates an opportunity for illicit use," a news release said, adding that medications dumped in a sink or toilet can cause harm to the environment.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, the department will help Pima County residents properly dispose of unused medications for free. No questions asked.Β 

You can bring prescription and over-the-counter pills, capsules, gel caps, medicated patches, and powders. Other items, such as liquid medication and inhalers, are not accepted.
