Mark Napier will be sworn in Tuesday morning as the 34th sheriff of Pima County.

Judge Kyle Bryson, presiding judge of Pima County Superior Court, will administer the oath during the 9 a.m. meeting of the county Board of Supervisors.

The public is invited to the swearing-in at the supervisorโ€™s hearing room in the downtown county administration building at 130 W. Congress St., said Deputy Ryan Inglett, a Sheriffโ€™s Department spokesman.

Napier, a Republican, defeated Sheriff Chris Nanos, a Democrat, in the November election.

Napier, an Army veteran, has 28 years of law enforcement experience โ€” 21 of those years were with the Tucson Police Department where he retired as a captain.

He also was a former assistant director for the Glendale Police Department, said Inglett.

Before he was elected sheriff, Napier was the associate director of operations for the University of Arizona parking and transportation services. He also taught masterโ€™s level criminal justice classes at Boston University, and also supervised instructors, Inglett said.

Napier, who was not able to be reached for comment Friday, said after the election his first priority is to restore department morale among many front-line employees who have felt overlooked, bullied or unappreciated.

He also has said that he plans to make changes in his command staff by possibly consolidating or scaling back on some positions. He described the departmentโ€™s administration as being top-heavy.
