State Rep. Victoria Steele resigned today to focus on her bid to win a seat in Congress.

The Tucson Democrat sent her resignation to the House leadership this afternoon, a campaign staffer confirmed.

Steele formed an exploratory committee last June, to run against Republican Rep.Β Martha McSallyΒ in Congressional District 2.Β 

She has been in the state legislature since 2012.

Local Democrats will now need to recommend three possible replacements to the Pima County Board of Supervisors.Β 

The appointee must be a Democrat and live in District 9.Β
