Saguaro National Park invites visitors to swap Christmas lights for shining stars during the annual Holiday Caravan on Dec. 29.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., park rangers will lead 90-minute, nighttime driving tours through the cactus forest in the Rincon Mountain District.

At stops along way, guides will discuss the holiday significance of the park’s dark, star-filled skies, the symbolism of its evergreen plants in the winter season and the importance of Saguaro’s native wildlife, especially its signature cactus.

Tours will depart every 30 minutes until the last one at 8 p.m. Visitors will drive their own cars on Cactus Forest Drive during the program, which includes a short, quarter-mile walk on a fully accessible trail. The caravan is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own water and snacks in the car. They should also dress for the night’s weather and carry a flashlight to use at tour stops.

Refreshments and activities will be available at the visitor center before and after each tour, and the gift shop will be open throughout the caravan.

Space is limited, so reservations are required in advance. To reserve a spot on a tour, you can call the park at 520-733-5153 or sign up in person at the Rincon Mountain Visitor Center at 3693 S. Old Spanish Trail.

There is no charge for the tour, but participants will have to pay the regular, seven-day park entrance fee of $25 per vehicle apply or present a valid pass at the entrance to the Cactus Forest loop.

More information is available by phone at 520-733-5153 or online at www.nps.gov/sagu.
