The Sahuarita Unified School District's $40 million bond measure was defeated by voters.

A gap of about 10 percentage points with all precincts having been reported left Superintendent Manuel Valenzuelaย feeling "disappointed."ย

The money would have helped the district build a new K-8 school, maintain and renovate old ones and purchase buses for student transportation, which he said was necessary to address the needs of a growing community.

"The needs are very clear and they are very real," Valenzuela said Wednesday morning. The district would now have to find other ways to address them.

Sahuarita schools will solicit feedback from the community to figure out what needs to be done. Though the failure of the bond measure is disappointing, he said that he honors the process of the proposition.ย

"This is unfortunate, but itโ€™s a bump in the road in the big picture," he said. "And weโ€™re going to continue to move forward together in pursuit of excellence for our students."
