A veteran law enforcement officer has been named the new police chief in South Tucson, the city announced Tuesday.

Manuel Amado, a native of Tucson who has worked in law enforcement for 28 years, was named the city's new chief and public safety director. He worked for the city's police department early in his career.

Amado will oversee South Tucson's police and fire departments.

Amado was police chief at Pima Community College and also worked as a deputy for the Pima County Sheriff's Department. He previously worked as a patrol officer and traffic unit supervisor for South Tucson.

Amado worked for 19 years with the PCC police department, starting as a field officer and eventually rising to chief of the department.

Amado's most recent position was as director of campus and public safety for Regis University in Denver. Regis is a private, nonprofit Jesuit university.

Amado replaces Police Chief Michael Ford, who was fired in June after he was accused by Mayor Ildefonso Green as being the source of negative news about the city.
