Joshua Eugin, a 36-year-old probationary firefighter with the Saint David Fire District, died during a training exercise Wednesday night.

A probationary firefighter in Southern Arizona died during a training exercise Wednesday night, officials say.

Joshua Eugin, 36, participated in a training with the Saint David Fire District, in which firefighters use a structure and fake smoke to simulate the conditions during a fire. Saint David is about an hour southeast from Tucson.

Eugin, who was also a former marine, collapsed during the training, a news release from the district says. EMTs on scene began CPR and Eugin was taken to the hospital where he died a couple hours later.Β

Eugin is described by Officer Mark Bonin as "one of the department's most dedicated members."

"Josh was a great friend and his loss has left a hole in the department," said Fire Captain Jason Todd.

Eugin is survived by his fiancee Chelsea, daughter Addy, and support dog Salty.Β
