Time is winding down to make one last dump run to the Tangerine Landfill.
The nearly full landfill at 10220 W. Tangerine Road will close its gates to the public on Dec. 1.
Opened in 1983, it was the first landfill in the state to contain any protective linings to prevent decomposing trash from leaching into the groundwater.
While the public won’t have access anymore, Pima County will continue to use the site for the trash it collects as part of its illegal dumping program, said Beth Gorman, senior program manager at the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality.
Even though the Tangerine Landfill will be off-limits soon, the public still has other options such as the Ryan Field Transfer Station, Catalina Transfer Station, Waste Management’s Ina Road Transfer Station, Los Reales Landfill and Sahuarita Landfill.
The Sahuarita Landfill, however, is also approaching capacity. The county tentatively anticipates closing it sometime in the summer of 2014. Gorman said the Sahuarita site will continue to operate as a transfer station.
If you’re wondering where to dispose of your old tires once the Tangerine Landfill closes, the county on Monday will move its waste tire collection facility to the county’s Ina Road Landfill, 5301 W. Ina Road, which is closed to all dumping except tires.
