Two tiny kittens were rescued from the approaching Sawmill Fire by a good Samaritan who heard them crying in his yard.

A man rescued two kittens from the approaching Sawmill fire Thursday, after he heard them crying in his yard as the fire drew closer to his property, officials said.

The good Samaritan saw no signs of the kittens' mother, so he caught them and took them to the Human Society of Southern Arizona, spokeswoman Vanessa Ford wrote in a news release.

The kittens will be fostered and cared for until they're ready to be adopted.

“We want anyone affected by the fire to know that if they find a stray animal, they can bring that animal to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona," said Brandy Burke, Chief Operations Officer. "This includes, not just dogs and cats, but smaller animals like domesticated rabbits, who may be displaced because of the fire."

The Humane Society is able to care for animals affected by disasters like the Sawmill Fire because of the group's disaster relief fund, Ford said.

“We are currently on standby to assist with the domestic pet evacuees of the Sawmill Fire," Ford said. "We’re in close contact with Pima County and the Southern Arizona Red Cross Chapter, actively monitoring this situation.”

Anyone who finds a stray animal in the area of the Sawmill Fire can contact the Humane Society at 327-6088 ext. 111.
