The Kon Tiki Restaurant and Lounge, opened in 1963, has been named one of 2018's best bars in America

Given Tucson's seemingly endless supply of dives, clubs and cocktail bars, it's not a surprise that one found its way onto a list of the country's best.

Foodie website, The Daily Meal, has come up with what it believes to be the 150 best bars in America, and coming in at number 144 is longtime Tucson classic, Kon Tiki.

"The Daily Meal’s list pays homage to bars that have become influencers, whether for their hoppy brews, kitschy drinks and décor, commitment to crafting classic cocktails, or penchant for pushing the bartending boundaries with ambitious ice programs and avant-garde mixology — and also to bars that are just, well, bars," the article says.

Bars were judged on the following criteria: Drinks, mixology, bartender, decor/experience, cuisine and essentials.

Having been a Tucson staple for more than 50 years, it seems fitting that Kon Tiki would find a place on the list.

"The tiki bar looks almost exactly as it did when it first opened — complete with gas-powered tiki torches, the world's largest collection of Milan Guanko tikis, and assorted island curios," the article says.
