Tucson has begun the hiring process to find a new police chief.
Chief Roberto Villaseñor, who has been chief for six years and a member of the department for 35 years, plans to retire in December.
On Tuesday, the Tucson City Council unanimously voted to create a Police Chief Advisory Committee, which will be 15 people who will help interview job finalists.
The city also has contracted with search consulting firm Police Executive Research Forum for $43,400.
The job announcement will be posted in early August and will be open for one month.
The new police chief must be appointed by the city manager and approved by the mayor and council, likely in November.
