Customs and Border Protection checkpoint

A truck is signaled to continue as it approaches the US Border Patrol checkpoint coming from Arivaca, Ariz. in 2014.

A Tucson man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle three Mexican nationals into Arizona, Border Patrol agents say.

Agents in Nogales took the 22-year-old man into custody Monday afternoon, U.S. Border Patrol officials say.

The incident happened at the Interstate 19 Immigration Checkpoint.

The man was driving his SUV in the primary inspection lane when agents discovered three people in the rear cargo area, authorities say.

They were questioned and agents learned they had entered the country illegally.

The trio, who are ages 19, 21 and 39, were turned over for processing for immigration violations.
