A man who crashed into a pole in midtown last month died from his injuries, police said Wednesday.

On April 20 shortly before 8 a.m., Gregory Ramirez, 31, was driving a white 2003 Chevrolet utility truck west on East 22nd Street, according to a Tucson Police Department Facebook post.

Ramirez drifted onto the northern sidewalk area before striking a utility pole near South Lakeshore Lane. The neighborhood is near Reid Park.

Officers responded and it took Tucson Fire Department firefighters about one hour to extricate Ramirez from the truck. He was taken to Banner-University Medical Center Tucson with life-threatening injuries. Ramirez died April 25 at the hospital, said police.

Since January, there have been 21 traffic fatalities in the city, compared to nine at this time last year, according to police data.
