Road construction will close portions of the Ajo Way/Interstate 19 interchange this week.

The exit ramp from southbound I-19 to Ajo Way is to be closed for concrete paving starting Monday, Feb. 26, at 3 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Drivers should use the 22nd Street/29th Street interchange or the Irvington Road interchange.

Other restrictions are scheduled to begin Friday, March 2, at 3 a.m.

  • Ajo Way will close to all traffic above I-19 as crews install new traffic signals and roadway striping.
  • All eastbound traffic on Ajo Way must exit to southbound I-19.
  • All westbound traffic on Ajo Way must exit to northbound I-19.
  • The northbound I-19 off-ramp to Ajo Way will close.
  • The southbound I-19 off-ramp to Ajo Way will remain closed.

All work is to be completed by Monday, March 5, at 5 a.m.

The second phase of the project is scheduled to start this summer.

That phase involves widening portions of I-19 near Ajo Way; replacing the Santa Cruz River bridge on Ajo Way and reconstructing and widening Ajo Way from Holiday Isle to I-19.
