A shooting early Saturday involving Tucson police sent one person to the hospital, officials say.

A man was shot early Saturday morning during a confrontation with Tucson police officers answering an emergency call about unknown trouble at an apartment complex, police say.

Early Saturday morning, shortly before 1 a.m., officers went to an apartment complex at 811 E. Prince Road near North First Avenue after a woman called 911 asking for police assistance. The 911 operator could hear arguing, and the caller advised that there were weapons, but did not provide additional details, according to a department press release.

When officers arrived on scene, they heard a woman yelling inside the apartment. Police asked both a man and a woman in the apartment to come out, which they both did upon request.

As the man was being detained, another man appeared from inside the apartment. At some point during a confrontation with that man, two officers fired at him, striking him. Police said man was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

No officers were wounded, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson police spokeswoman.

The officers on Monday were identified as Sgt. David Hill, a 14-year veteran of TPD, and Officer Melissa Ayun, a 12-year veteran of the force.

Detectives are continuing to investigate. Anyone with any additional information is asked to call 88-crime.
