Tucson police said a man who attempted to jump onto a moving box truck died when he fell off and hit his head Thursday night.

The driver, James Massey, 58, was arrested and is facing auto theft charges. Other charges are pending, Tucson police said in a news release Friday.

Police said Massey and three adult male passengers were in a box truck that had been stolen from a business earlier in the day.

Massey was driving the truck up to Mount Lemmon but as the truck approached the area of North Bear Canyon Road and East Tanque Verde Road, the engine began having problems and so Massey pulled over to let it cool down. Two of his passengers got out of the truck.

A short time later, Massey started the truck and began to head northbound on Bear Canyon without the two passengers. Both men attempted to climb back into the truck but fell off when the truck made a U-turn.

One of the men, in his late 60s, struck his head on the pavement and was later pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Massey continued to drive away but was stopped by a sheriff's deputy a few blocks away. Massey displayed signs of impairment and a DUI investigation was conducted, police said.

The investigation is continuing. The name of the dead man was not released pending notification of his relatives.
