Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords shared this orange-hued image on her Facebook page Thursday, National Gun Violence Awareness Day. An event in Tucson is set to begin at 7 p.m. downtown.

A "Light the Night" gathering is set tonight downtown as part of National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

The event runs from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at El Presidio Park, 160 W. Alameda St. The park is in front of City Hall.

Participants are asked to wear orange in honor of gun violence victims.

The event is part of a national effort. Several celebrities have been posting photos of themselves dressed in orange, including former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Gifford was the target of the Jan. 8, 2011, mass shooting here that left six dead and 13 wounded. Those killed included 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green, U.S. District Court Judge John Roll and Giffords' aide Gabe Zimmerman.

Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, founded an advocacy group after the shooting that helped persuade President Obama to take executive action on gun control.
