In some not-so-great news as Thanksgiving approaches, a personal finance and travel website has just named Tucson the 6th most dangerous big city in the United States.
While many safety rankings rely mostly on crime statistics, Reward Expert also analyzes elements that impacts safety, ranging from health hazards to natural disasters to financial risks.
"We not only analyzed FBI crime statistics; we contextualized them as well, keeping in mind the fact that there is much more to safety than crime and murder rates," the report says. "After all, you are less likely to become a homicide victim than you are to die in a car crash, and likewise, disaster and disease are greater threats to your safety and security than property crime."
The report analyzed U.S. cities and towns with populations of more than 3,000 people, using 32 safety indicators divided into eight categories.
After the numbers were crunched, Tucson landed pretty close to the bottom as far as safety, and here's why Reward Expert says we landed where we did:
"Tucson has a homicide rate barely above the national average (5.4 per 100,000 vs. 3.4 per 100,000) and rates well– relative to other cities on this list– on measures of financial risk and overall premature mortality risk.
However, these are still quite high compared to the rest of the country. Firearm-related and automobile crash fatality rates are very high in Tucson, as is the unemployment rate. The USDOT Fatal Crash Reporting System reported 52 fatal car crashes in 2015, while there are 222 licensed gun dealers listed in the most current available data from the ATF."
