Re: the August 21 article "Monsanto set to grow greenhouse crops here."

Regarding the Star article on Monsanto and glyphosate, Science magazine recently reported that over 100 Nobel laureates sent a letter that strongly chastises Greenpeace for its opposition to genetically modified organisms. The scientific community has overwhelmingly acknowledged that GMOs are safe. But much like the climate change deniers, Greenpeace refuses to back down even after decades of actual use and research contradicts their position.

The article implied that since the International Agency for Research on Cancer listed glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic" the EPA was reassessing its opinion on glyphosate. Glyphosate has been under an automatic registration review that all EPA approved chemicals undergo every 15 years and was in no way promulgated by the IARC listing. The European Food Safety Authority recently affirmed its position that glyphosate is safe.

GMO-derived foods are proven to offer less pesticide use, greater productivity, reduced water demands and higher nutritional value to meet the needs of a burgeoning world population. Can we afford to throw all that out because of unfounded alarmist attacks?
