Re: the July 19 letter "Statements on Racism were just as racist."

Asking members of a historically privileged group to learn about that history and speak out against that unearned privilege is not an example of racism.

Some examples of racism are: Being targeted for a subprime mortgage because of your race; being told that housing is not available because of your race; having your resume thrown away because your name identifies you racially; receiving inferior medical advice or education because of your race; being paid less and charged more because of your race; being stopped, searched, beaten or killed by the police because of your race; being arrested, convicted, and given a harsh sentence because of your race.

What I find "disheartening" is the number of my fellow white people who imagine that prejudice toward whites is a problem anywhere near commensurate with the systemic inequities people of color face in education, housing, health care, employment and the justice system.
